How to make a payment

Note: All fee payments must be made to CIPO in Canadian dollars. Foreign currencies will not be accepted as payment for any fees.


Modes of payment

CIPO accepts the following modes of payment:


Payments using cash or debit card are accepted only at CIPO Headquarters located at 50 Victoria Street, Place du Portage I, Room C-114 in Gatineau, Quebec.

Credit card payments can be made online, by mail, by fax and in-person

Credit cards: Visa, MasterCard and American Express only

CIPO provides a summary report of credit card transactions for clients with a minimum of one transaction for the month. Note that this is for paper filing only.

Note that there is a limit of $99,999 or 2000 files on online credit card transactions.

The summary report is also available online

In order to view your online statements, you must first contact CIPO's Finance and Administration Directorate in writing to link your credit cards to the authorized Industry Canada users in your firm. Please include the name of your firm, credit card numbers, and Industry Canada username.

Deposit Account payments can be made online, by fax, or mail or in person.

Opening a deposit account

To open a deposit account, please complete and submit the deposit account form.

Using your deposit account

To use your deposit account to pay via the e-filing systems released before April 1, 2008, you only list your current deposit account number.

To use a deposit account to pay via the e-filing systems released after April 2008, designated members of your firm must be set up to access the new deposit accounts systems.

  • To request access to your deposit accounts to authorized Strategis User(s) in your firm, you must contact CIPO's Finance and Administration Directorate in writing using the access form.
  • Include the name of your firm, deposit account numbers, and the Strategis user account number(s)

Replenishing your deposit account

Deposit Account Replenishment can be made in Cash / Debit Cards, by Online banking Service, by Cheques / Money Orders or Wire Transfers.

To replenish your deposit account, fill out the fee payment form and submit it to CIPO with your payment by:

Deposit Account Statements

Electronic-Filing / Online limits

Note that there is a limit of 2000 files per deposit account transaction.

Closing your deposit account

To close your deposit account, please complete and submit the close a deposit account form.

CIPO's deposit account holders can replenish their accounts via their Canadian bank's online system.

To open a CIPO deposit account follow the instructions under Deposit Accounts.

Use of on-line banking will be limited to clients who are currently registered to use CIPO's on-line electronic statements service to view their credit card and deposit account transactions. Clients who are not currently registered should contact CIPO's Finance and Administration Directorate for instructions on how to access their on-line electronic statements.

Please follow these instructions to take advantage of this option:

  1. Log into your online banking account
  2. Add CIPO as a recipient in the bill payment section 1
  3. Enter CIPO's ten-digit online banking number which can be found on the
    Online Statements page of CIPO's website under "On-Line Banking Ref. No." column. 2
  4. Transfer the desired amount of money to replenish your CIPO deposit account

1 CIPO might appear as "Canadian Intellectual Property Office", "Office de la propriété intellectuelle du Canada" or a similar name. If CIPO is not listed, ask your financial institution to add it to the list of recipients.

2 To access your online statements you must have an Industry Canada account with a username and password.

In order to create an account, retrieve a lost or forgotten username or password or update your Industry Canada account visit My Industry Canada Account. Then please contact CIPO's Finance and Administration Directorate to link your Industry Canada username to your online deposit account statement. Your request must include your firm's name deposit account number and Industry Canada username.

All cheques and money orders must be in Canadian dollars, and made payable to the Receiver General for Canada.

Important Information: All electronic funds transfers must be made through the Bank of Nova Scotia, in Canadian dollars and be made payable to the Receiver General for Canada.

Please note that you are responsible for any transaction fees charged by your banking institution. All charges relating to electronic payments are to be paid by the customer and not deducted from the remittance amount.
