CIPO uses the United States Patent and Trademark Office's Checker program* to assist in checking Sequence Listings for compliance with WIPO'S PCT Sequence Listing Standard (ST .25).

A version of the Checker program is available on the USPTO website for use by applicants to assist in pre-checking their Sequence Listing for compliance prior to submission to a patent office. The Checker program is only an aid and cannot check and confirm all possible entries that could be submitted in a listing. Please see the USPTO's Checker program page and carefully read the “User Notes” section to understand the limitations of the validation.

Applicants can also pre-check their Sequence Listing by using the European Patent Office's sequence submissions tool, BiSSAP*.

If the sequence listing includes any non-ASCII characters such as French accents, German umlauts or Greek letters, the USPTO Checker program will not run and will present an error message stating that "Input file is neither Numeric or Alpha" (not ST.25 or ST.23). All non-ASCII characters need to be removed for the Checker program to run and verify the sequence listing.
