Patent Branch update

Patent Practice Notice: Registration of assignments and correction of assignment-related information

Consideration of comments received has been completed, and this Notice is in effect as of January 20, 2012.

This Notice aims at clarifying the position of the Patent Office with respect to the registration and correction of assignments, thereby facilitating and accelerating the registration process while maintaining high-quality standards.

Consultation and Discussion

As part of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office's (CIPO) commitment to provide quality and timely intellectual property rights, the Patent Branch, Trade-marks Branch and the Copyright and Industrial Design Branch are requesting your participation in a consultation on two proposed practice notices. They are intended to clarify the practice regarding Assignments/Transfers as well as corrective mechanisms for Assignments.

For more details on the suggested changes, your attention is directed to the proposed practice notices entitled:

Any comments you may wish to submit will be reviewed during the consultation period and will be considered prior to being posted on this website. Your comments are appreciated and will add value to the process of finalizing our practice notices. Please note that all comments will be retained online for three (3) months from the date of posting.
