Consultation and Discussion

As part of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office's (CIPO) commitment to provide quality and timely intellectual property rights, the Trade-marks Branch is requesting your participation in a consultation on two (2) proposed practice notices. These are intended to provide some clarification regarding the application of the provisions of paragraph 12(1)(b) of the Trade-marks Act to professional designations and to trade-marks that consists of or contain an abbreviation, acronym or initial.

For more details on the suggested changes, your attention is directed to the proposed practice notices entitled Professional Designations and Their Initials and Descriptiveness of Abbreviations, acronyms or Initials.

Any comments you may wish to submit will be reviewed during the consultation period and will be considered prior to being posted on this website. Your comments are appreciated and will add value to the process of finalizing our practice notice. Please note that all comments will be retained online for three (3) months from the date of posting.
