Electronic Payment of Patent Maintenance Fees
Introduction
Welcome to the Patent Maintenance Fee Electronic Payment service.
The Patent Maintenance Fee Electronic Payment service allows you to quickly and conveniently pay maintenance fees for Canadian patents and patent applications by:
- Selecting your patent(s) or patent application(s) from a provided list showing fee due dates;
- Creating your own list of patent document numbers; or
- Uploading a file of your patent document numbers.
NOTE: Maintenance fees for secret applications cannot be paid using the electronic payment method. Please see the General Correspondence page for other payment methods.
To obtain an activation code
You will need an activation code to access the secure Patent Maintenance Fee Electronic Payment service. In order to obtain an activation code, you must:
- Acquire an Industry Canada username and password, which can be obtained online from the Industry Canada Registration page.
- Use the Industry Canada username and password to complete the Patent Branch's payment of patent maintenance fees registration process.
- You will be mailed an activation code in two to three weeks.
Once you receive your activation code, you can then return to the payment of patent maintenance fees page and access your account.
Note: Maintenance fees on patent applications can only be paid by the authorized correspondent.
Note: Hours of operation for this e-service are:
- Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., EST; and
- Saturday noon to 5:00 p.m., EST
Alternative Arrangements for Online Payment of Maintenance Fees
In the event there is a failure in any component of web site or in the data communication, you can pay the maintenance fees using other means such as by regular mail. For more information, please consult CIPO's Correspondence Procedures.

- Saturday noon to 5:00 p.m., EST
Change of Agent
Please note that recently submitted Change of Agent documents might have not been processed yet. If it is the case, you may not be able to pay the maintenance fees for affected patent applications.
Method of Payment
Payments may be made by credit card or by deposit account.
System and Browser Requirements

Period of Inactivity
For security reasons, in the event there is no user activity for a period of 30 minutes after initial login, the application will disconnect the user from this electronic service.
