Effective May 12, 2008, the Industrial Design Office will no longer charge a fee for the recordal of documents other than assignments and licences. For assignments and licences, the fee for each affected design still applies (item 4 of the Tariff of Fees).

This change in the application of fees in Industrial Design is part of CIPO's commitment to improve client services, operational processes and support electronic self-service for clients. This initiative is consistent with steps taken or being planned for by other business lines in CIPO. In addition, the intent of this change is to support and encourage consistent updating of client information to ensure that the searchable Canadian Industrial Design Database contains current information on intellectual property ownership.

The online form for electronic filing of an assignment or licence in the Industrial Design Office is being updated to support this practice change.

Office procedures related to recordals remain otherwise unchanged.

Questions may be addressed to the Industrial Design Office via our Client Service Centre.
