Removal of Copyright Information Circulars

Recently, the Copyright and Industrial Design Branch made the decision to discontinue print and website publication of the Copyright Information Circulars, which have been in existence since 1997.

The circulars were removed primarily because they are no longer considered to contain accurate and timely information for our clients. A decision has also been made to simplify the copyright information that CIPO provides to its clients by adhering to our obligations under the Copyright Act and Regulations. Under the Copyright Act, CIPO is responsible for registering applications for copyright and to maintain an official Register.

You are invited to consult CIPO's website, where clients have been provided with links to other organizations, which will be able to provide accurate and comprehensive information on copyright issues that fall outside the scope of registration.

CIPO will continue to provide the best possible service and information with respect to registration of copyright, maintain accurate records in the Copyright Register, and provide access to a searchable database of copyright records.
