G8/G20 Summits - Contingency Plans for the Receipt of Intellectual Property documents at Industry Canada, 151 Yonge Street, 4th floor, Toronto, Ontario

This location is expected to be open as usual for the workdays leading up to the G20 Summit which will take place Saturday and Sunday June 26 and 27, 2010. In the event that it is closed due to unforeseen circumstances associated with the G8/G20 Summits, correspondence may be delivered to the following alternate designated establishment.

For the purposes of subsections 5(4) and 54(3) of the Patent Rules, subsection 3(4) of the Trade-marks Regulations, subsection 2(4) of the Copyright Regulations, subsection 3(4) of the Industrial Design Regulations and subsection 3(4) of the Integrated Circuit Topography Regulations, the following establishment is designated as an establishment to which correspondence addressed to the Commissioner of Patents, the Registrar of Trade-marks, the Copyright Office or the Registrar of Topographies may be delivered, during ordinary business hours of that establishment, in the event that the designated establishment at 151 Yonge Street is closed due to circumstances associated with the G8/G20 Summits.

Service Interruption: May 26, 2010

On Wednesday, May 26, 2010, CIPO closed for business at 1:50 p.m. due to a broken water main.

Because CIPO was closed for business for part of May 26, CIPO considers that all time limits that would have otherwise expired on that day are extended until Thursday, May 27.

Because CIPO was also open for business for part of May 26, CIPO considers any correspondence delivered to CIPO or to a designated establishment (i.e. an Industry Canada regional office or the Canada Post Registered Mail Service) on May 26 to have been received by CIPO on May 26. This means that applications for patents, trade-marks or industrial designs submitted on May 26 would be entitled to a May 26 filing date.

The City of Gatineau has encountered water problems necessitating the closure of our offices and the evacuation of all employees. As such all CIPO staff has been evacuated causing a service interruption. This includes the Client Services Centre as well as the mail room. Mail should be directed to 235 Queen Street Ottawa, Industry Canada - Mail Room.
