Consultations on Proposed Amendments to the Patent Rules – Package #1

Proposed Amendments to the Patent Rules B Package #1 has been pre-published in the Canada Gazette Part I, as of July 11, 2009. The Regulatory Policy requires that federal departments and agencies demonstrate that Canadians have been consulted and that they have had an opportunity to participate in developing or modifying regulations and regulatory programs. CIPO's New Fee Payment Form Now Accepted

As part of the two Practice Notices issued in April, CIPO introduced a new Fee Payment Form aimed at increasing the security of clients' financial information and improving the process for fee payments sent by mail, facsimile or hand-delivery.

The latest version of the Fee Payment Form is available in PDF version (PDF - 1.2 MB). Note that the date on the bottom left corner of the form should read (2009/05). For complete information regarding the changes, consult theFee Payment Practice of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

New Prices for IP Data Products

Intellectual property (IP) data products to enhance database searches are available for purchase in bulk format at new prices. As of July 1, 2009, prices for all of CIPO's IP data products will be based on the marginal cost of production. This new pricing methodology, consistent across all IP types, supports CIPO's dissemination objective of increasing the visibility of Canadian IP information by making it available at the lowest possible cost, and is in line with other international IP offices.

New Intellectual Property Teaching Tools

CIPO is pleased to announce the launch of a series of case studies designed to increase the awareness of intellectual property issues among college and university students.

Building on the success of a pilot project in collaboration with McMaster University, CIPO is now expanding the initiative nationally.

The Intellectual Property Case Studies program aims to offer the study, analysis and discussion of concrete business situations drawn on real problems in real companies. Educational materials were designed to increase the awareness of intellectual property issues among college and university students and better prepare them in their future careers as scientists, researchers, engineers or entrepreneurs. The new series of case studies on intellectual property will be available for the upcoming fall semester.

It Starts With: Our People

CIPO's Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on June 11th. Mary Carman, CIPO's CEO, addressed a crowd of more than 650 employees. The AGM activities and presentations demonstrated where CIPO currently stands and the direction it intends to take in the coming year as well as training and development, trends, challenges and the way in which they are being handled. Commissioner Carman's remarks touched on CIPO's achievements over the past year, goals for the future and intellectual property in the current economic climate.
